Character Profiles.

Within the film opening we are going to introduce three of the main characters with some dialogue and another main characters but only for a brief second without any dialogue. The main characters will be the mother, father and the little girl, and then we have the brief encounter with the villain.
During the opening of the film we will see four different news reporters three of which will be in a studio and one out in a field where the last sighting of the girl was.
I have thought about the types of people I would like to play these eight characters down to there clothing, hair colour and personality that comes across to the audience.

Little Girl.
For the little girl I would like her to have long brown hair, not too short about 10 – 13 years of age. Her personality has to come across to the audience as being bubbly and lovely the type of child that would have lots of friends. She would need to be loud and clear when reading the script and would need to be able to take direction, I did think about having a younger child but due to the taking of direction it would be better for her to be 10 – 13. This is a picture of a girl who is in the media already she is the type of child I would like to play the part in my film.

Mother
I would want the mother to have brown hair, and in there late thirties to early forties. Again she should have a bubbly personality, caring and very mothering. She needs to be very loud and clear in the dialogue and needs to be able to take direction. This is a picture of what I would the mother to look like in the film.

Father
For the character that is the father I would like someone who can play a serious part as well as being kind, caring and fun. He needs to be very business oriented. He needs to be tall with brown hair and between the ages 40 - 45. This is a picture of what I would like the father to look like.

Villain
The villain has to be of average height, big built in the arms and body, between the ages of 40 - 45. He has to have a fierce personality which would be revealed during the rest of the film when he is properly introduced to the audience. He has to have a deep voice to make it sound more frightening for the girl playing the part of the other character. This is a picture of what I would like the villain to look like.

Within the opening we see four different news reporters I have got pictures of what I would like them to look like. I would like them to be between the ages of 25 - 45 so they can give a mature and serious performance.

Comparison of my ideas to other films.

I have looked at two psychological thrillers and analysed them, I have then compared them both to the ideas that I have for my own film.

I've analysed up to 3 minutes.
The titles that have been used are written so that the words are shown backwards on the screen. Slow and quiet music has been used to make the opening seem eerie to help with the genre of the film. Non-diegetic sound effects have been used of birds and crickets as well as creaking noises again this adds to the genre of the film. The opening is set in a forest, its fast pace as we see the running of the main character. The opening has a great use of open narrative.

I have analysed up to 2 minutes.
The titles that have been used are very basic and are just black block capitals. The opening is set in a graveyard and then changes to a road which then helps to keep an open narrative as the audience doesn't know what is going to happen. It starts of black and white and then blurs into colour. The opening has music of which we hear trumpets and then diegetic sounds of church bells and children singing.

I have chosen to analyse these openings as they are both completely different from each other but they have some things that I can compare to my film opening.
The Titles in the silence of the lambs are written backwards to go with the theme of the film, I think that they must make more sence during the rest of the film.

This is the same as our film as we want to use a handwritten type font to go with the theme of the tick list.
Within the opening of straw dogs it starts off with the scene in black and white and we want the part with the CCTV footage in black and white as well.

We want to start the opening with a montage of news reports with flashes of photos of the missing girl, CCTV footage of when she was last seen, and information of what she looks like. We then have a clip of the girl in her bathroom cleaning her teeth when she bends down we see a villain in the mirror and then when she gets back up hes gone. The audience is then shown a conversation between the parents and the child at the breakfast table before the girl goes to school. We have a good open narrative and the music we are going to use we start of slow and quiet and as the montages get quicker the music will get quicker as well and it will also get louder.

Analysis of 2 Psychological Thrillers

This is the best video I could find for the film, the sound isn't completely in sync and it has subtitles but I was still able to analyze it.

Triangle (2009)
The titles that have been used look really basic but the way they appear on the screen is really effective. We see small white block capitals which appear on a black screen, once they appear they then split so we see three of the same title, the two that have split off of it then disappear and the middle one stays for a while before fading out itself. Having the three titles could represent the three sides of a triangle which then fits with the title and the fading out and disappearing may fit with the storyline.
The opening is made up of short clips the first being the two characters is a dark room and then the rest both in the house and the garden, in-between each clip the titles are shown this helps the audience to think about the clip they've just seen while looking at the titles.
A house and garden has been used for the setting of the opening but the first clip that we are shown is in a dark room. The dark room shows the audience that something bad is going to happen or is happening whereas the house and garden shows everyday life.
Within the opening we are introduced to two characters these being a little boy and his mother. Not much is given away about the characters which really helps to keep an open narrative but what is shown keeps the audiences attention and makes them want to carry on watching.
Within the opening we see a variety of sources of water such as a swimming pool, sprinklers, tears and paint, water is a key representative of psychological thrillers so it helps to portray the genre.
The atmosphere is made to make the audience feel quite strange, its very quiet and the mother seems to be worried and panicky which puts the audience on edge and wondering what is happening and what is going to happen.
Slow quiet music is played through the opening, with use of a woman singing a lullaby. It is backed my piano to make it eerie, we also hear the diegetic sound of water at times and the diegetic dialogue from both the characters.
Open narrative has been used, the audience can start to piece together the storyline of the film through the opening but wouldn't have a clue on what is going to happen further on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf-ZwM-3X1w
The embedding has been disabled on this video and I wasn't able to find another one like it on YouTube.

Cube (1997)
The use of the titling that the opening uses is great, it fits perfectly with the name of the film and its really creative at the same time. They've used a white screen and one by one small rectangle and square blocks appear on the screen to make up the title, this then makes the title look 3D. The screen then goes black and the edge of the letters are then white to give it a shadowed effect.
The opening starts straight away with a cubed room, we then see further on in the opening that the room leads into other cubed rooms through small tunnels in the walls. This use of setting confuses the audience and really gets them thinking, no other settings have been used through out the opening so it really helps with the narrative as nothing is given away to what is actually happening and how the characters have got into the rooms in the first place.
The openings starts with an eye opening and then reveals a man lying on the floor of the cubed room. The audience has no indications of who the man is, what he is doing there or why. The character seems to be very confused and scared with shows the audience that maybe he has the same questions as the audience themselves.
The themes of the opening help to also get the audience thinking, the rooms are cubed and have a set of squares on each wall including the floor and ceiling. Each room that the audience is introduced to is a different colour, the man starts off in a white room, he then opens one of the tunnel doors to find a blue room which represents the main colour of the genre, then a red room which connotes death and murder and then finally an orange coloured room, this is the room that the man then enters and gets killed in. This could then mean that the colours of the rooms are a trick and that the man avoided the red room due to the colour but thought that the orange one would be ok.
The opening gives a strange atmosphere, it makes the audience feel on edge as there is no indication on what is going to happen next but it also feels lonely due to the character being on their own.
Throughout the opening we here non-diegetic noises which sound like wind from out side the room, odd creaking and other strange noises are also used.
Finally there's a perfect example of an open narrative that has been used as hardly anything has been given away so the audience has no idea what is going on or what is going to happen in the rest of the film.

2.06 - 5 secs - directed by

Within both openings the title is shown near the very start of it, in 'When a stranger calls' it appears at 10 seconds and in the Tenant it appears at 6 seconds. Both openings have the same sort of layout with the titles, they both show what type of film it is and who has distributed it, then they show a few of the box office actor names in it to keep the audiences attention and then they show the title. The actors names then carry on and then they round it up with the things like, music, photography, screenplay and then finally Written, produced and directed by.
From comparing the two openings it has shown me that I should set my opening out much like this. I will try to keep the same sort of order of titles to keep with this trend within psychological thrillers as well as all openings.

Film Openings - Student Films

After looking at film openings, the narratives, sound and genres I'm looking at student films so see the strengths and weaknesses of them, what improvements I would have made to the final version of the opening and finally how watching those films will benefit me for when I'm making my film.

Solitude

Strengths
- You can tell that the film is an opening and not trailer.
- Its doesn't give too much away so the audience still wants to find out what happens but still watching.
- The film has a great use of an open narrative as it tell you the storyboard but not the ending.

Weaknesses.
- The production name (one bad apple production) isn't really appropriate for the genre as they are trying to have a horror and that adds comedy to the film.
- The acting has to be more stricter as one of the characters is smiling whilst she is meant to be dead.
- There is one section where the windscreen wipers are up and then after they are down.

Benefits for my film.
- From watching this film I've found that a lot of research needs to be done on the genre to make sure that we can come up with the best name for the film to go with what the audience is seeing.
- Its shown me that even though its not all about the acting we will need to make sure we pick the best people for the film and to be strict on them so that we come out with the best results.
- We will need to make sure that if we need to re-film things that we try to make everything the same otherwise the audience can tell that it has been filmed at different times, which could confuse them as well as making it look less professional.

Peephole

Strengths
- The genre is shown clearly through the use of blood and the colours red and black.

Weaknesses
- The opening gives to much away to the audience.
- The opening has a closed narrative so the film can't carry on after the opening.

Benefits for my film.
- Thanks to this film I know that a lot of planning has to go into the narrative of the film, we need to make sure that after what the audience see in the opening we could go onto the rest of a film as well as making sure we don't give to much away in just a few minutes.

Fugitive

Strengths.
- The setting that was good for the opening was really good and well thought about.

Weaknesses.
- The opening went too quickly so the audience isn't able to keep up.
- Its more like a trailer rather than an opening.
- The opening has a closed narrative so the film has no where to go.

Benefits for my film.
- For my film I not going to have as many characters or things going on as I think it gives to much away and becomes a bit confusing at times. As there is so much going on at once the audience has to keep up and even though having this really helps towards the genre of the film it makes it harder on the audience.
- Again this film shows that a lot of planning needs to go into the narrative to make sure that we keep it as an open narrative.

Film Openings - Considering Genre

When considering genres you have to look at film titles, the introduction to characters and characters types, the setting if the opening or film has a historical period. You have to look at the information that is given on the mood and tone of the film, if the opening plays the signature theme tune and if there are questions that the viewer finds intriguing.

 Star wars
- Sci-fi
- Space Ships
- Outer space
- Lighting = dark
- Loud fast pace music
- Action
- Drums and symbols
- Sound effects guns and lasers

The opening to Star Wars shows you that the genre of the film is going to be sci-fi and action, this is due to the use of the dark lighting of the scene to show that it is set in outer space as well as having space ships, and sound effects of guns and lasers. The use of loud fast pace music connotes the action in the genre of the film. The fast editing and action of the mise-en-scene also adds to this.

Intermission
- Action
- Physiological thriller
- Tension
- Open narrative
- Fast pace music
- Fast pace editing
- Hand held camera - tension and action

The opening of Intermission shows the audience that the film is going to be of a action and maybe even a physiological thriller genre. The opening really makes the audience think about what the characters and saying and what they could mean by it, the audience tries to think ahead to what could happen. The music that is used is very fast paced which shows the action of the opening, as well as the fast pace editing, the tension is built up the use of the hand held camera when running after the main male antagonist. The opening has a great use of open narrative as the character is introduced in the light that he should be probably seen through out the film but the opening doesn't tell as the whole story which keeps the audience interested.

Blade   0-2 minutes
- Dark scene
- Dancing
- Tension - loads of people
- Bright red titles
- Fast pace - tension
- Thriller
- Horror
- Blood / Death
- Flashing lights - tension
- Red spray - Blood

From the opening of Blade two different genres come across from it, thriller and horror. The scene is very dark and is set in a night club so that there are a lot of people all of which are in a small space. The use of the red pray and the end of the two minutes connotes blood which enforces the genre of horror. The flashing and strobe lighting and fast pace music and editing builds up the tension and the thriller side of the genre. The titles are in block capitals and are bright red giving connotations of blood and death this shows the horror side of the genre as well as the use of mise-en-scene when the red spray is used which also represented blood.

Ghost busters
Lighting is low key – sets a dark mood
Jingle is upbeat and comical – juxtaposition
Woman screaming diegetically – ghostly glows on her face
Red circle enclosing woman – connotations of violence
Setting – 1980s – hair, clothes, technologies
Editing – glow around film title
Ghost in the title – shows the theme of the film
Narrative – man giving cards protagonist
Shows romance – blonde female
‘Paranormal Studies’ – shows the genre of the film

From the opening of the we can tell the genre of Ghost busters is a comic horror, we see this from the ghost in the title, its a cartoon ghost so the audience can instantly tell that it is going to be comic. Juxtaposition is used with the sound, we here a short jingle which is upbeat and comical. The scene has low key lighting which sets a dark mood and the red circle that encloses on the woman gives connotations of violence, death and danger. They have edited the title so that there is a glow around it making it creepy to to with the themes of ghosts. Another theme we see is romance from having the character of a blonde female. Another genre that we see is paranormal studies from the costumes of the characters. The setting of the scene is in the 1980's we can see this from the hair, clothing and the technologies that are used within the scene.

- Open Narrative
- Tells you that people are going to die, murdered, get hurt

Sound.
- Creaking / Sounds like thunder
- Squealing, Squeaking and Screaming
- Heart beat sound
- Fast pace / high pitch music

Analysis.

The narrative of the piece shows and tells us the story line of the film but it uses an open narrative. It shows the audience that people are going to die, be murdered and get hurt.
From the opening the films comes across to be a thriller and maybe even a horror genre, this is because of all the red and black that is used as well as the music played. The colours cause the atmosphere to be scary and the music and sound cause tension for the audience.
We see themes of murder, death and a lot of pain again this is because of the sound and colours that are used.
the opening doesn't really have a proper setting but from what we do see we can tell that a lot of it is in a small dark room this is due to the lack of space and the darkness of the scene. We see piles of books, pictures and newspapers all scattered around the room which builds up tension as the audience want to know what is happening.
None of the characters are introduced or seen during the opening we just see the characters hands and movements. This helps the narrative to stay open as its still showing the audience what is going to happen but by not showing any of the characters makes the audience want to watch past the opening.
All of the sound that is used within the opening is all used to build up the tension for the audience all of the sound are within the piece of music but could be heard as sound effects to create more of an atmosphere. The music is overall high pitched, and fast paced but we also hear a lot or creaking of floorboards and low rumbles as if we are hearing thunder. As well as squeaking of floorboards and shrieking of people. There is also a low beat that we hear every few seconds during g one part of the opening this could come across to the audience ad being a heartbeat again building up the tension and scares the audience.
Finally the titles all look as though they have been scratched onto a surface to enforce the horror of the opening as well as looking as though they have been scribbled onto a piece of paper. The first titles that we see are the distributor, institutions and the director, we then see the names of the box office actors and then the actual film title at 23 seconds into the opening. After that the other titles of various people to do with the film including other actors are then shown.

Notes and Opening analysis on Reservoir Dogs and Hitch - 19/01/11

Objective for a trailer - a great use of fade to black transitions and effects and discontinuing editing helps to make the perfect trailer. The audience should find out the storyline and the plot but not too much should be given away. The trailer needs to be fast pace and snappy in order to intrigue the audience.

Objective for an opening - the opening usually lasts about 2 minutes, the titles of the main box office actors the institution and distribution names and directors names should be shown and the audience should get an idea of the genre, character roles of the main setting.

Reservoir Dogs - Opening

Titles.
- Normal New Times Roman font - gold colour
- Just main actors and the film title are shown

Genre.
- Gangster

Sound.
- Juxtaposition

Atmosphere.
- Gangster
- Serious
- Fun

Narrative.
- Tells you that they are a group of guys and they are going somewhere important

Setting.
- Car park

Theme.
- Violence
- Gangs
- Crime

Character.
- Gangsters - Cigar, dark glasses and gold chains

The opening to Reservoir Dogs shows us the narrative of a group of men walking somewhere but without tells the audience where they are heading. Even though the audience doesn't know where the group is going you know that they aren't going to have a cup of tea. You can tell that they may be going to cause or sort out trouble.
The titles that we see are in basic font and a gold colour this could show the audience that they are out to get money and the plan font showing that they don't hang around or really plan things they just do what they want when they want.
The characters are shown As very stereotype gangsters due to the gold chains, smoking if cigars and black sun glasses.
Just from the opening we see its a gangster genre and has themes of maybe violence, gangs and crime.
The atmosphere comes across to be very serious but fun at the same time due to the characters all seeming to be friends.
The opening is set in a car park which shows they could be going somewhere in a town but it doesn't give anything away about the rest of the film.
Finally the sound is the use of juxtaposition as it doesn't really fit what the audience are seeing.

Hitch - Opening

Titles.
- Small formal to show its a type of business

Characters.
- 3 guys and 3 girls to get them together
- main guy running a relationship match business

Genre.
- Romantic - Comedy

Atmosphere.
- Romance
- Happy

Setting.
- Hotel
- Gym
- Theatre
- Sweet shop (all public places)

Themes.
- Love
- Work
- Hobbies

Sound.
- Laid Back
- Relaxing
- Romantic
- Light hearted
- Narrator speaking

Narrative.
- You have the narrator telling you the story as well as him being the main character

The opening to Hitch shows the narrative by having the main character both talking to the camera and narrating over the other parts of the opening. He tells us that he has men that have there eye on someone but don't know how to make there move so they go to him and he sets them up with each other. That is then the business that he runs.
From the opening we see that the film is a romantic comedy with themes of love, work and hobbies.
All the settings of the opening are public places such as a hotel, theatre, gym and a sweet shop, this then means that the majority of the settings have been introduced in the opening for the audience to get the plot of the film.
The atmosphere that the audience gets from the opening is a romantic and happy feeling.
In the opening we are introduced to seven different characters, three men and three women which we see should later become three couples, we are also introduced to the main character who is the narrator and the business owner.
The music that is played is very laid back and relaxing which gives a romantic and light hearted feel to the opening as well as hearing the dialogue from the narrator.
Finally the titles are in a small block font making it look very formal this also gives the audience the feel of the film being about a business. We see the titles of the main actors and the director. At the start we see the different institutions and distribution companies. The actual title of the film is then shown about two minutes after the opening titles.

Comparison between the trailer and the opening.
The genre in the trailer comes across to the audience as being an action, thriller but from the opening you don't get the thriller you get spy instead. This could be so that the audience gets pulled in by the trailer thinking that its a thriller.
The narrative from the trailer tells you this its all about gambling, love, fighting, criminals and spy's where as in the opening you only really find out that its about gambling this is because the trailer tells the audience information about the majority of the film and the opening only wants to tell you the overall theme of the film to keep the audience interested.
The atmosphere and themes tell the audience how to feel through out the film by it giving the atmosphere of suspense and tension and themes of love and spying. In the opening the suspense is still there but mystery has also been added again to keep the audience interested.
During the trailer we see all the settings in the film which gives so much away about the film but in the opening we just see a casino.
Finally the title of the film is revealed at the end of the trailer but pretty much at the beginning of the opening. The trailer only gives the main box office actors names compared with the opening which gives the same but includes other titles and names of the institutions, director and other actors which are added after.

G321 Initial Notes 13/01/11

When looking at the filming of the opening you have to concentrate particularly on these things:
- hold shot steady
- framing a shot
- using a variety of shot distances

When analysing the film openings and trailers you need to look at these 8 different sections in detail.

- It includes Wedding Preparations

The Sound within the opening is giving instructions on how to treat a man and how to act and be for when you get married to them.

The titles that were used for the opening of the film were:
- Handwritten font (maybe like an invitation)
- Julia Roberts (Box Office Appeal)
